Joseph Ron Greenwell       1962

Ron went to St. Catherine College in Springfield, Kentucky where he majored in journalism. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in the Vietnam War.

Ron spent his entire journalism career with the Kentucky Standard, which was a span of 36 years. Ron was especially noted for the coverage of the area's three high schools. He did an excellent job and held great repartee with all the coaches. He took a personal interest in the young players' lives both on and off the field. His coverage was unbiased which helped him win the respect of these competing factions.

Ron received numerous awards from the Kentucky Press Association not only for his writing but also for photography. He was a superb photographer.

In 1996 he was inducted into the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame. Ron not only was a noted sports writer, he also wrote and served on the paper's editorial board. He published a book which is a compilation of columns and stories he had written in the Standard.

I believe that Steve Lowry, former Standard editor, summed it up best when commenting on Ron's career: "What he leaves behind is a community he touched with his life."

Ron was born to Elmer and Hester Greenwell in 1944. He graduated from St. Joe Prep in 1962 and went on to St. Catherine where he studied journalism.

His first stint at the Kentucky Standard began in 1964 and after 2 years he was drafted and served in the U.S. Army at Vietnam. He came home on Friday and started back to work on Monday.

The qualities that make Ron Greenwell unique are true Nelson County qualities: He is devoted to his family, church, his community, the Kentucky Standard, and the people he works with. He is kind and positive in his stories and has given countless hours to his job and community.

Hundreds on young people throughout the county have been inspired and encouraged by Ron's articles, pictures, and advice.
