MIDI sequenced by Bill Basham Info from Alex Lu Arcangelo Corelli (1653-1713) was the first violinist who is famous for his virtuosity as well as his knowledge on composition. He was born in Milan in 1653, but spent most of his life in Rome, as well as some of his time in Bologna. For a mastero of the period, he travelled a lot, because he was not attached to a particular court, unlike most musicians of his time. The zenith of his instrumental works can be seen in his Concerto Grosso in G minor, Op.6/8, subtitled the 'Christmas Concerto'. . .It also modulates through a series of different keys before finishing in G major, and leading into the Pastorale ad Libitum. It is ad. lib. because it was not the custom to attach a Pastorale to the end of a concerto, but as this is the Christmas Concerto, a Pastorale may be justified. Out of the whole Concerto, the Pastorale is perhaps the most beautiful movement of all. This demonstrates the extreme genius of Corelli - he is able to write powerful music as well as dolcissmo music.
